HID lights have a glass chamber of gas that replaces the filament of traditional halogen light bulbs. The gas is ignited with an approximately 23,000 volt charge and stays illuminated by a constant 12v source that is provided by a ballast which is connected directly to your battery. Remarkably, HID lights are able to provide greater light output with much less power consumption. Studies show that a 35 watt HID lamp produces 3 times as much light compared to a 55 watt halogen bulb. Moreover, the 55 watt halogen bulb uses a continuous power draw of 10-15 amps, while the HID system uses 20 amps for starting up, but then drops down to a mere 3 amps during operation (that is up to 80% less power during use!). In addition to high output and low power usage, the HID headlight provides longer service life. With no filament to vibrate and fatigue, under normal driving conditions, HID bulbs last roughly 10 times longer than halogen bulbs. What is the HID Color Temperature? Color Temperature is a measurement in Degrees Kelvin that indicates the hue of a light source, in this case the HID bulb. Color temperature is a characteristic of light that is sometimes misunderstood as brightness, when it's more closely related to cool and warm color tones of light. While cool and warm are words used to describe a light's temperature, this may be a bit misleading. The term color temperature actually refers to the color that is associated with the amount of heat needed to produce a color in from an ideal black body. If you are looking for an HID kit for a reasonable price, Kensun is definitely the way to go!! Appears to be of great quality and the lights look just like the OEM factory HID's on my Acura. 4300K is definitely the way to go. Don't be a ricer and get the dim blue/purple color and be blind at night. If you have proper projector lenses, the cutoff will give you the nice blueish/indigo shade from angles just like the nice looking stock luxury car HID's. I made sure to change out my fuses with 20A fuses like the instructions say, and they power on perfectly and the lights don't flicker at all like I have read from some other reviewers. Get the slim digital ballasts! Definitely worth the extra cost as I think that is why I have no flicker problems at all and the smaller size makes it really easy to hide the ballast and give it a nice clean factory install look. A friend who recommended this kit to me got the normal one and ended up having to use a relay harness to prevent the flickering.Since I just installed them tonight, I can't comment on the longevity of them, but customer service is great and these come with a 2 year warranty, so you really have nothing to lose. The ballasts look and feel very solid and of great quality, and even if the bulbs burn out the day after your 2 years warranty runs out, a new set is only 26 bucks!! Can't beat that!
Installation took longer than expected because I took my time routing the wires and making a very clean install. You have to really look in there to notice where I hid the ballasts in my Mazda 3. Also, there are a lot of things that aren't listed in the instructions you have to figure out that are quite agravating, but wasn't a huge problem. Some are just from my stupidity, but I think others would probably get a little frustrated too. Example, the bulbs come in this hard plastic protective casing. It looked like it screwed off... but I couldnt figure out how, it just appeared to keep spining when I tried to unscrew it. After a few minutes of playing with it, I finally realized the plastic casing was 2 pieces that were screwed together, not a single case that was screwed onto the bulb. Once you unscrew the casing, the bottom piece of the casing cant come off the bulb side, so you have to feed the wires through it while making sure not to touch the HID (the oil from your fingers will ruin HIDs). It was kind of a pain. Once you get that off, there is a white plastic washer that looks like its suppose to be on there as part of the seal when you put the bulb in the headlight housing, but it is actually just another piece of that protective casing system and the bulb WILL NOT fit in the housing with it on there. If anyone complains that it is not fitting (at least for the H11 size) and you know you ordered the right bulb type, this is probably your problem. After you get that stupid plastic washer off, while making sure not to touch the bulb, you then have to fit the real rubber grommet thing into the groove its suppose to go in that the washer just came out of. This was probably the most agravating part to me. I understand these bulbs are extremely delicate and need this protective casing when shipping them, but it just seems to me that there has got to be a better contraption they could come up with that isnt so confusing. Or at least describe this process in the instructions somewhere.
I'm also a little bummed out that my kit did not have an H11 plug to plug directly into the factory wiring like I thought it would. It has two wires with spades you just stick in the female contacts on the factory wiring, leaving the connections exposed.... pretty ghetto if you ask me. I ended up just wrapping it in electrical tape to protect it and then hiding it down away from sight. Not a big deal, but I really didn't want to electrical tape them because if I ever sell the car and want to go back to stock, I now have a sticky mess of electrical tape to clean up. Not cool. I also read in some other reviews that the kensun H11 actually did have a true male H11 connector to plug into the factory wire harness, which is one of the reasons I went with this kit..... not sure why mine didn't.
All in all, I am extremely happy with my purchase! If your not an absolute idiot, you won't have any problems installing these and the results are completely worth the effort. Thanks kensun for making an awesome product at a very reasonable price!! I will definitely buy a set for every car I own from here on out if they don't already have them from the factory.
