Purchased to carry 1 adult mtn bike (about 32 lbs) and 2 kids' bmx bikes (20") on a 700 mile car ride through a combination of southern California (I-5 & US-99) freeways, winding mountain roads and some local roads with uneven pavements. The rack was installed on a '03 Honda Odyssey minivan. The rack is thoughtfully made -- the large rubber adapter ("anti-sway cradle") on the rack arms swivel to adjust to the non-standard geometries of the mtn bike frame, and gives ample number of options for adjustments. I can easily imagine how the rack would carry a beach cruiser, but I think carrying 16" kids' bike would be a challenge because the space between the arms is not small enough for them.

Another thoughtful addition to the rack was the "dumbbell" adapter to wedge inside the hatch hinge -- I used this attachment instead of the top hook because the top edge of the rear hatch on my minivan is plastic and was not sturdy enough to hold the weight of the bikes.

When the rack is empty, the two arms fold away with quick-release levers, so I drove around town with the rack attached to the hatch and was also able to close the door of the garage when parked. And although the manufacturer doesn't recommend it, I was also able to open and close the rear hatch with the empty rack still attached to the vehicle.

There is adequate room for 3 bikes, but I would actually be nervous to carry 3 heavy adult bikes on this rack if I were to drive on rougher roads. Because of the design (contact points to the vehicle are relatively close together and are cushioned with foam), there is some inherent sway when you hit bumps, etc. -- a wider stance rack would be more stable, but these tended to be pricier.

Some racks of this type by other manufacturers do not have side hooks and attach with only at the top and the bottom straps/hooks -- I would insist on a model with side hooks for lateral stability.
