All CURT hitches come with mounting hardware and easy to follow installation instructions. Our class 1 hitches have a 1-1/4 In. receiver opening, and rate up to 2,000 Lbs. gross trailer weight (GTW) and 200 Lbs. tongue weight (TW). We're so confident in the quality of our receiver hitches that we back them up with a limited lifetime warranty and a one year finish warranty.CURT Manufacturing 11074 Class 1 Trailer Hitch, Pin and Clip Review
Great looking class I tow hitch gives my 2007 VW GTI added utility, with only a small foot print under the rear bumper!PROS:
+ Extremely sturdy, 2000 lb towing weight, 200 lb tongue weight capacity
+ Mostly "hidden" under the bumper
+ Gloss black finish is attractive and seems durable
+ Easy installation
+ Price
+ Relatively lightweight (~30 lbs)
CONS:
- Decreases ground clearance on an already low stock height
- Torques on instructions may be correct, but did not work out for my installation
INSTALLATION:
Not much is needed for installation - 18mm deep socket, 19mm deep socket, 6-8 inch extension, ratchet, torque wrench (capable of up to 92 ft-lbs per instructions), ramps. OPTIONAL: jack stands (if you don't have a buddy to help you hold up the hitch during installation), breaker bar
Only 4 bolts are required to hook this hitch up to your frame, 2 of which are already attached to the frame, and the other 2 come w/ the kit. The 2 bolts that come w/ the kit need to be fished thru a hole in the frame w/ the provided fish wire, which is extremely simple and makes this a breeze. Youtube "how to fish wire bolt" if you need a visual on how to do so. If you are having trouble finding where the mounting points on the frame are on your car, go to etrailer(dot)com, look up this model, and one of the reviewers on there posted pictures of where the points are, which was a great help to me.
The only trouble I had during installation was with the bolt torques. The M12 (bolts already on the frame) are to be torqued to 92 ft-lbs, and the 2 bolts that came w/ the kit to 75 ft-lbs. I had no trouble torquing the 75s, but attempting to torque the M12 bolts to 92 ft-lbs resulted in the head of the bolt to snap right off. We had a heck of a time trying to find a bolt of the right size to replace it, and an even worse time removing the broken bolt from the frame. I'm not exactly sure if the torque wrench was at fault (not popping at 92 ft-lbs properly) or if the M12 bolt is unable to withstand 92 ft-lbs, which is highly unlikely, but to be safe the next time I around, I torqued each bolt to 75 ft-lbs w/ a 90 degree turn using the breaker bar.
The instructions are most likely correct, but I would suggest using the step-up method when torquing to be on the safe side (40-60-75-92 ft-lbs). If you do happen to snap the bolt, I replaced mine w/ a 12x1.50, 8.8 class bolt found at Ace Hardware. The original bolt is a 10.9 class, which is a stronger bolt, but neither Ace Hardware, AutoZone, O'Reily, Advance Auto, or Lowe's had a 10.9 class. The 8.8 was enough to torque it properly.
I am using this with the Pro Series 6500 Black 48" x 20" Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier, and am also planning to purchase a hitch mounted platform bike rack. This hitch is a class I and 1 1/4" in diameter - keep that in mind when shopping for carriers. I am also going to upload some pictures to the product page, so check those out to see the hitch out of the box and installed on the car.
